College Graduation.
Some students tempted to just scrap the whole thing and hit the ground running without so much as a glance back at their tiny hometown college.
Others relish in the moment.
The moment that puts a formal punctuation mark on the crazy four years (or ten years, depending on how much you crazy you get) we call the university experience. Commencement speeches are often riddled with cliche upon cliche. “You are the future,” or “Seize the day,” or silly little phrases like “You can change the world.” We hear these prosaic declarations, the rolling of eyes ensues and we think, “Oh yeah, i’m sure changing the world will just fall into my lap during the hours of nine-to-five in my corporate job.”
Sometimes though when we give our brothers cynicism and better judgment the cold shoulder and alllow ourselves to enjoy and believe in those dramatic, romantic notions you will be inspired. Yes, inspired. Not “motivational-workplace-poster” inspired, but the real thing. For just an instant, allow yourself to believe in all those dramatic, romantic notions.

It’s everyone’s question these days if a master’s degree is worth it.

Should you bite the financial bullet and get more educational training,
OR
try to make it in the career real world first?
Click here for a forum on NY Times where M.A. grads wrote in their thoughts on the process.

Online Distractions
I don’t know if you’re like me, but I dream of a job that give me flexibility of time and location. I find myself searching through the employment ads of Craigslist.org or our local big classifieds site on KSL.com for legitimate jobs that allow for me to stay employed at home. Most are the “business opportunities” and are scams with companies trying to take advantage of the dreamers like myself. Truth be known, I don’t know if I could handle a work at home job right now in my life. I have a three year old and a one year old at home, and a list of honey do’s that keeps growing from my wife. I find coming to an office is a break at this point in my life, but I know many people may be ready for a work from home career.
That got me thinking and wanting to help others thinking about a work from home career or even thinking about getting their online degree. Those students who are able to develop the discipline to go to school, graduate, and get their online degrees are much further ahead in their modern day work ethics. There are so many distractions at our fingertips now a days that you really have to have a plan of attack to stay focused on tasks and to do what needs to be done. I thought I would try and put together a list of things that have distracted me when working from home and/or studying from home, and actions to overcome the distractions.

As I near my undergraduate graduation date, I can’t help but acknowledge the gnawing feeling of hopelessness that I will never find a job in this recession. I can find internships galore, but a paying gig? Um….”we’ll get back to you.”
Apparently, I’m not alone.
A recent article in Slate Magazine echoed my sentiments completely. It describes that the cumbersome part of it is that we twentysomethings feel that we have dutifully set up our lives based on assumptions that no longer apply. I’ve gone to college for the past four years, the whole time with the idea that I would graduate and ride off into the sunset to my sexy, exciting career in Public Relations. Au contraire, my friends. The reality is that these days it’s is more advantageous for us young folk to stay in school rather than brave the abysmal job search these days. I’ve been researching lots of programs and seeing what is out there. There are so many university programs and career-oriented programs like MyCollegesandCareers.
It’s something to think about. Historically, people with graduate degrees make more money than those with just undergrad degrees and hopefully that rule will still apply in a few years when the economy has bounced back. It has to at some point. I mean, even Britney Spears has bounced back, as evidenced last night at her rousing concert last night in Salt Lake. So maybe the thing to do is to slug it out in grad school as the economy bounces back, and then re-enter the job scene to reclaim your territory.
