What Do Employers Think of Job Applicants with Online Degrees?

July 14th, 2010 by Sarah Ward

The benefits associated with an online degree are many: the flexibility to study at your own pace, to continue working while completing your education, to raise a family while earning your degree, to attend the best school for your field while living on the other side of the world — and the list goes on.  But how are online degrees perceived by employers?  Is there still the same level of credibility from earning an online degree as a traditional degree?

  • In a recent survey conducted by the Distance Education and Training Council, 100% of employers surveyed reported that employees who had graduated with online degrees performed better on the job as a result of their experiences.
  • In the same study, employers reported that employees who had an online degree compared favorably to employees who had earned traditional degrees.
  • In an Edventures 2005 Continuing and Professional Education report, 62% of 505 employers surveyed (including companies such as Bank of America, DaimlerChrysler, and the United States Air Force) thought that online education was equal to or superior than classroom education.

It’s clear that online degrees have favorable perceived value from employers, allowing students with online degrees to compete against their counterparts with traditional degrees.  To find more information about online degrees in your area, visit My Colleges and Careers.

Video Games Fabulous Teaching Tools Says Justice O’Connor

May 28th, 2010 by Sarah Ward

On Wednesday, former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor spoke with ABC News about a great new learning tool for children — video games.

“They’re fabulous,” she told George Stephanopoulos this week. “And we’ve had tests done. And the students go up 20 percent in their knowledge by playing those games. It’s just incredible.”

Since middle school aged children are spending 40 hours on average in front of a screen, Justice O’Connor says, “if we can capture just part of that time, to get ‘em in front of a computer screen to play these games, they’re going to learn.  [T]hey’re fun.  The games are great.”

Integrating modern technology such as this into today’s teaching methods is an effective way to teach the up and coming computer-savvy generation.  A free resource, both teachers and students will benefit from these educational video games.

Go Green with Online Education

On April 22, the planet celebrates Earth Day and looks for ways to become more earth-conscious and leave a smaller carbon footprint.  By searching #EarthDay on Twitter, we saw lots of creative ways people have to go green on Earth Day:

  1. Watch Earth Day related movies like 2012, the 11th Hour, Pocahontas. We added Avatar, Fern Gully and An Inconvenient Truth to the list
  2. Take “Power Showers” and switch off the water when your soaping/shampooing
  3. Save water by showering with someone
  4. Recycle old electronics and computers and even gadgets. Would you wear a recycled cassette tape necktie, or use a rubber tire laptop sleeve?
  5. And our personal favorite: raise free-range children

One way you may not have considered to go green is to engage in online education.  Whether you’re a student pursuing a college education, or a working professional improving your qualifications for increased opportunities, online education is a terrific solution.  Not only does online education give you the freedom and flexibility to work/live/tweet, online education is another way to go green.

The commute… or lack thereof

Imagine waking up, rolling out of bed, and commuting to the living room for your Psychology 101 class.  Does that sound like the type of commute you could live with?  Online education allows students to further their education anywhere they have internet access.  Whether that is the break room at work, the community library, or the cafe in France you landed a job at while living abroad, online education comes to you.

Energy conservation

A traditional campus, with it all its classrooms, lecture halls, labs, and offices, use electricity and energy to light, heat, and cool the premises all year round, not to mention manpower to supervise, secure, and landscape the premises.  Colleges in the U.S. put $2 billion per year into energy on campus according to the EPA.  Your online classroom is you and your laptop.  That’s a lot of energy saved.

Save the trees

Instead of printing handouts, assignments, and projects, online education allows teachers and students to communicate through an online blackboard and via email.  Assignments can be turned in through an attachment in an email, rather than a double spaced, single sided printed copy, saving paper, trees, and ink.  Since 1 billion trees worth of paper are discarded every year, imagine how many trees would be saved through the paper preservation with online education.

The e-book alternative

Instead of investing hundreds of dollars each semester in textbooks you’ll only use once, e-books are a green alternative.  If any new editions are released, rather than printing a whole new edition, the e-book can digitally be updated.

While Earth Day reminds us of our collective responsibility to preserve the planet, investing in an online education will help you to go green everyday.

  • Benefit of an Online Masters Degree #1: Flexibility.  For busy professionals actively involved in their careers, an online masters degree allows students the flexibility of working at their own pace.
  • Benefit of an Online Masters Degree #2: Go Green. Individuals pursuing an online masters degree can cut down on commuting, greenhouse gases, and paper consumption with online textbooks.  This additional time and funds students save can be reallocated towards their education.
  • Benefit of an Online Masters Degree #3: Accessibility.  Instead of needing to be on campus, students can access their online masters degree studies anywhere they have internet access.  Thanks to broadband, students can access high-speed internet while on the go, providing virtually limitless learning opportunities.

Online Education Solves Problems

Problem: You’ve spent the last few years…umm…”finding yourself” which could include playing video games, watching America’s Next Top Model reruns, or trying to make it as an actor. You have wasted some time and need to graduate fast!

Solution: Online Education. You can more classes online than you are allowed to at a traditional university and you can work as fast you need to.

Problem: You have an on-again off-again illness. You would love to take classes but you can really time your nauseous bouts to occur before or after American Heritage 110.

Solution: Online Education. When you’re feeling great you can finish tons of lessons online to make up for those days when you aren’t feeling well.

Problem: You have little ones. 2-year-olds aren’t the most portable things on earth (the carseats, the blanket, the toys, the snacks) and they don’t really get the concept of being quiet during your Chemistry 101 class.

Solution: Online Education. You can take quizzes online while little Suzy watches Dora the Explorer (PS. Why does Dora always seem to be yelling?) and you can read your assigned chapters for English during her nap.
